High amounts of Coco and Bark allow this mix to retain moisture when saturated. The mix has similar properties to our Monstera and Philodendron mix, however has a finer grade of aggregate to suit Syngonium’s medium to small sized roots. As they can tolerate heavily waterings, we have added non-porous grit to act as a balance in the mix, allowing the mixture to begin to dry up in spots creating a slowly, even drying blend.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat Syngonium want from their soil:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese plants want mild moisture, organic matter and plenty of small to medium air chambers. As hemiepiphytes, Bark is ideal in their mixture, as well as other moisture retaining elements such as a high Coco Coir percentage. Providing non-porous aggregate such as Grit is useful as a tool against overwatering, which is particularly common with Syngonium as they do thrive in moist soil. They are quite adaptable and if  the soil is left dry for longer than normal they will continue to grow, but at a much slower rate than if the substrate was kept lightly moist. It is advised to water in small amounts  and often so the plant never too wet and never too dry. Always allow the soil to partially dry before adding a small top up of water. Ultimately they want something that doesn’t become dense overtime as it can suffocate their roots. Therefore having coarse components as well as fine Sand allows for long term stability in soil density. Bark adds a nice bonus to the semi-epiphytic types of Ficus that like to cling onto Bark and break it down slowly overtime with the microbes around their roots. Taller species of Ficus such as Rubber plants and Fiddle-leaf figs will benefit from the bark too as it increases structural stability in the pot. Given that Fern have very primitive, hair-thin roots, sand is a very important component in creating micro-passages for the roots to crawl through. Alongside this, the doubled amount of Worm Castings with a high Coco Coir portion means this mix is fertile and moisture retentive. The Sand creates tiny pockets of air for the roots as well as superior drainage, while the Perlite scatters larger air chambers throughout the pot. The Zeolite present in the mix will also  hold a lot of the nutrients when watering, allowing the roots to feed for longer.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat Ferns want from their soil mix:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlthough there are a variety of Ferns found in the household this mix suits the majority of them nicely. What ferns ultimately want is moisture and fertility. However it is also important to remember the fine structure of ferns roots. It’s important that the soil is as loose as possible (which is why we add Sand) as it allows these tiny roots to easily crawl through the pot, rather than work through dense, muddy substrate. A good soil for these plants provides plenty of aggregate and bark for roots to crawl around as they grow. The mixture should retain moisture evenly throughout the pot and dry out steadily in a medium period of time (1.5 - 2 weeks) whilst also being very well draining. These plants like moisture but not muddy soil. The aggregates in our blend helps to create a loose mix which avoids dense soil conditions, which is likely to lead to root rot. Monstera and Philodendron also do not mind being left in dry substrates for medium amounts of time (1 - 1.5 weeks in bone dry soil). However if left for too long in dry soil their roots can wilt and become non-functional,  increasing risk of root rot after the next watering.
